    John Le Gay Brereton was born in Sydney in 1871. He attended Sydney Grammar School where he was a member of the editorial committee of the school magazine, the 'Sydneian'. As an undergraduate at Sydney University he edited the student magazine 'Hermes' to which he also contributed poetry and literary criticism. He was appointed Assistant Librarian of Fisher Library in 1902 and Librarian in 1915. In 1921 he became the university's first Challis Professor of English Literature. He published several volumes of poetry as well as collections of essays and reminiscences and was one of the most influential literary and academic figures of his time.
  • Scope and Content
    One volume containing six issues of 'Minerva', a manuscript magazine edited by Le Gay Brereton while at Sydney Grammar School. It contains a novel by Herbert Badgery, news items, correspondence etc. and is illustrated with some charming watercolours.
    Also included is correspondence between Harry Chaplin, a former owner of the volume, and Sydney Grammar School in 1959 concerning the volume.
