  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

William Jerdan, born in Scotland in 1782, was a professional journalist, author, publisher and literary agent. In 1817 he produced the Literary Gazette (1817-1862) that was the earliest weekly venture of its kind. Produced from The Strand, London, this journal aimed at mass circulation and reviewed literature and theatre, as well as featuring original poetry and verse. It had considerable influence throughout the 1820's and 1830's, having a direct impact on the sales of the literature it reviewed. Jerdan received this correspondence in his capacity as editor. -- Reference: The Cambridge History of English and American Literature. Vol. XIV, Part 2, The Victorian Age / A.W. Ward, et. al. (ed.)
