  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    In 1839, William Wakefield, younger brother of Edward Gibbon Wakefield, sailed in the Tory bound for New Zealand with orders from the New Zealand Land Company to locate a suitable site for settlement and purchase this from the Maoris. Wakefield was also instructed to prepare for the reception of a large body of settlers.
