  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Stuart Campbell was born in Sydney in 1903 and studied enigineering at Sydney University. In 1926 he joined the RAAF and in 1928 served as pilot and photographic officer on a flight from HMAS Albatross, the first Australian aircraft carrier. He was chief pilot on Sir Douglas Mawson's expeditions to Antarctica, 1929-31. In 1933 he worked his passage to England as an ordinary seaman. He returned the following year and carried out aerial surveys in Papua New Guinea and Australia. He saw active service in the RAAF during World War 2 and in 1947 was selected to lead the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition.

    September 1928 - 16 August 1929; Diary of his journey to Papua New Guinea.
    19 November 1932 - 18 November 1933; Diary of his voyage to England and his time there (2 vols) with two loose tables of expenses.
    1930-32; Five discharge certificates from the Discovery (2), Albatross (2) and King John (1).
    11 July 1930; Australian Pilot's licence.
    30 September 1933; Ground Engineer's licence.
    16 December 1935; Certificate of Pratique at Thursday Island.
    March 1947; Typed draft letter from Dr H.V. Evatt, Minister for External Affairs about Campbell's proposed appointment for an Antarctic expedition, with details of his career.
    13 May 1947; Typed memorandum from the Prime Minister's Department approving the appointment.
    1947; Related draft typed letter to Air Marshall Williams.
    May 1949; Two complimentary Qantas Empire Airways tickets.
    Undated; Small black & white photograph of Campbell hiking in snow.
