In November 1881 the British Government granted a charter to the British North Borneo Provisional Association. The company assumed charge of the territory under the title of the British North Borneo (Chartered) Company in 1882. This company governed the state of North Borneo until January 1942, when it was occupied by the Japanese, and was the last of the chartered companies to administer an area in the British Empire. In 1946 the territory, together with the island of Labuan became the Crown Colony of North Borneo. The company then went into voluntary liquidation
