Arrived in Sydney 1829 and established himself as a butcher in Goulburn St. In 1838 he purchased 3 acres of land at Surry Hill now the southern end of Bourke St, Redfern, and established a market and floral garden, which became known as 'Baptist's Garden'. His son, John Thomas, by a second marriage, inherited the land - Scope and Contenta. 'Abstract of the title of John Thomas Baptist, Esquire to 3 acres of land at Surry Hills in the Parish of Alexandria', Norton Smith, 1899. b. Surveyor's certificates, terms of payment and receipts for land at Redfern, sold by John Thomas Baptist, Jr., to Elisa Lees Hampson, 2 May 1899 - 2 Jun 1900
