The Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts, founded in 1833, was originally situated at the Surveyor-General's Offices, Church Hill. In 1837 the institution moved to its own premises where it provided a library service and weekly educational classes. In 1879 the Sydney Technical College, which emerged from the School of Arts, was inaugurated.
