J. W. Dell was one of three survivors of Captain Scott's Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904, and a member of Sir Ernest Shackleton's Quest expedition, 1921-1922. Between expeditions he served in the Royal Navy, saw action off the Dardanelles and served in the Harwich Flotilla in the 1914-1918 War. He was Chief Petty Officer on the Quest - Scope and ContentI. Diary, 17 September 1921-13 August 1922. Kept on board the Quest, includes description of progress of ship, the death of Sir Ernest Shackleton, 5 January 1922, contemporary press cuttings and a sketch presumably of the Quest.
