James Collier, 1846-1925, historian and writer, was born in Scotland. He was secretary and research assistant to Herbert Spencer from 1871 to 1880. In 1882 he migrated to New Zealand, moving in 1895 to Sydney - Scope and Contenta. Notebooks, with indexes, 6 Jan. 1879-1 Oct. 1894. b. Newspaper cutting re. Collier, 1925. c. Drafts of articles submitted for publication, 189- - c.1920 Typescript and carbon typescript, with MS. corrections and additions. This collection also included The Citizen: an independent fortnightly journal, vol. 11, no.19, 24 Sep. 1909, Wellington N.Z. which is now shelved in the Printed Books collection
