    Captain J. Shepherd was sent by the British Commander in Chief on the South American Station, Valparaiso, to make the annual tour of the Islands 'for the purpose of communicating with our Consuls, protecting our commerce, maintaining order amongst the Seamen of our Merchant Vessels and redressing the grievances of our British Subjects'. He visited Pitcairn Island, the Sandwich Islands and Tahiti

    A contemporary copy of the journal kept by Shepherd on the Sparrow hawk describing the visit to the islands and including accounts of the geography, history and life of the native people. The account of his visit to the volcano of Kiruea on Hawaii is illustrated by a map and profile. Extracts from the Pitcairn Island Register of Births, Deaths and Marriages, 1790-September 1839, are included
