John Smith, 1811-1895, grazier, arrived in Sydney in 1836. He became Superintendent to John Betts in 1839 for the property Molong, N.S.W. In 1845 he bought part of this run and in 1847 built Gamboola. He married Mary Tom in 1842 - Scope and ContentVols ML MSS. 2646/1-4 Journal, 1842-1861. Xerox copy; refers to activities re Molong, Gamboola and other properties; volume for 1842-1844 contains letterbook, 1848-1858; negative microfilm at FM4/4187. Vol. ML MSS. 2646/5 Correspondence, mainly re his properties, 1846-1887. Vol. ML MSS. 2646/6X Sheep ledger, 1839-1845; contains returns to the Commissioner of Crown Lands, including returns of sheep, horses and cattle. Sent in for the property of Molong. Vols ML MSS. 2646/7, 8X Ledgers, 1854-1863, 1877-1895; include alphabetical indexes to accounts.
