    Jacobina Burn, nee Hunter, of Edinburgh, 1763-1851, arrived in Van Diemen's Land in 1821. One of the first women to receive land grants in Tasmania, she owned Ellangowan, near Hamilton. Her son, David Burn, ca. 1799-1875, settler and author, followed his mother to Hobart in May, 1826 and continued his journalistic and literary career. His daughter, Jemima Frances, later Mrs Irvine arrived in Tasmania as an infant with her father

    The papers include a letter from Jacobina Burn to her grand-daughter Jemima Frances Burn, Abbey Bank, 15 November 1836, regarding domestic matters; MS. chapter of a novel in the hand of David Burn, headed, 'Chapter sixteenth, Desultory'; photocopy of letter from Jemima F. Irvine to J. W. Beattie, photographer and collector, 25 July 1911, including photocopy of two pages of her father's 'Chapter Sixteenth' with comments on the identity of the characters. Also included is correspondence between collectors re identification of these items
