Hal Porter, author and artist, was born in Melbourne 1911, worked as a cadet reporter, schoolmaster, librarian, director and actor. In 1961 he began to concentrate on writing. He received Commonwealth Literary Fund Fellowships in 1956, 1960, 1968 and subsidies in 1961, 1972 and was awarded a three year grant, 1974-1976.
