Bertie Arthur Wood, born in England and a gasfitter of Junee, New South Wales, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic at the age of 22, on 14 April 1916. He was a corporal with the 56th Battalion, 2nd Reinforcements, Australian Imperial Forces, in Egypt. He did not see active service, and was discharged after losing the sight of one eye, returning to Australia on HT Borda, 17 Aug. 1916 - Scope and ContentDiary, 8 April - 13 Oct. 1916 describing voyage from Sydney to Port Said on the Ceramic, 15 Apr. - 13 May, experiences in camp in Egypt and return voyage to Sydney on S.S. Borda, 17 Aug. - 19 Sept. 1916
