- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
W. Colenso, 1811-1899, missionary and botanist, arrived at Paihia, Bay of Islands, New Zealand in December 1834 and owed much of his systematic training in botany to Allan Cunningham who visited Paihia in 1838. He made journeys to Bay of Plenty and East Coast districts of New Zealand in 1838, in 1839 travelled overland to Cape Reinga and in 1841-1842 to the East Coast, Urewera and Waikato districts - Scope and Content'Glossarium Botanicum: Novae Zelandiae': attributed to Colenso on the evidence of his initialled signature throughout the volume, a list, at front, of specimens headed 'To Hooker', to whom it is known he sent specimens and the date 1838 on the title page as he appears to have been the only resident systematic botanist working in New Zealand in that year
