- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
The United States Exploring Expedition under the command of Charles Wilkes left U.S.A. Aug. 1838, returning July 1842. The ships in the expedition were the Flying Fish, Oregon, Peacock, Porpoise, Relief, Seagull and Vincennes. The expedition visited the Antarctic, Sydney Harbour, Bay of Islands, N.Z., various islands in the Pacific and areas on the coast of South America and U.S.A. - Scope and Content(1) Microfilm MAV/FM4/4614-4619: Letters received by the Secretary of the Navy relative to the expedition, 1836-1842. (2) Microfilm MAV/FM4/4620-4638: Journals and logs of the expedition, 1838-1842. (3) Microfilm MAV/FM4/4639-4640: Record of court-martial proceedings, held in the cases of Lieutenant John B. Dale, Robert E. Johnson, Robert F. Pinckney and others, 1838-1842. 'Contents', 'Introduction', 'Chronological List Covered by Journals on each Ship' and 'Landings of the Vessels in the Squadron' are to be found at the beginning of reel MAV/FM4/4614.
