Samuel Enderby, born in England, was a merchant and whaler. In 1791 he arranged for whalers to carry convicts to Port Jackson in the Third Fleet. Among these vessels was the Britannia, the first ship to take sperm whales on the Australian coast. Enderby sent the Rattler to survey whaling grounds in the south-eastern Pacific resulting in regular whaling expeditions and the transportation of goods to the Colony -- Reference: Australian Dictionary of Biography.
