    David Dundas, born in Edinburgh in 1735, was a Scottish General and Commander-in-Chief of the British Army, from 1809 to 1811. Henry Torrens, was a Major-General, Colonel of the 2nd (Queen's) foot, and Adjutant-General of the forces. In 1809 Torrens was appointed Military Secretary of the Commander-in-Chief of the British Army, and in 1812 was chosen for Aide-de-camp to the Duke of York.
    The "Frederick" in this manuscript is likely to be HRH Frederick Augustus, Duke of York and Albany, and Earl of Ulster, also known as Duke of York, Frederick Augustus Hanover. He was Commander-in-Chief of His Majesties Forces from 1795 to 1809, and in 1811. -- Reference: Public Record Office, National Archives, England

    23 Feb. 1811 - 26 Jul. 1811; Includes memorandum to the Adjutant-General (H. Torrens) requesting the arrest of Lieutenant Colonel Johnston, Mar. 1811; cases of Gilbert Dick, private soldier in the 47th Regiment of Foot and Patrick McCabe of the 87th Regiment (to be sentenced to N.S.W for desertion), 27 Jun. 1811; continuation of trial of Lieut. Colonel George Johnston, Major of the 102 Regiment of Foot, for his actions in Jan. 1808, namely joining in a "mutiny by putting himself at the head of the New South Wales Corps", imprisoning William Bligh by military force, and claiming the position of Captain General and Governor, 29 Jun. 1811

    From p. 271, 31 May 1811, letters are signed "Frederick Commander in Chief". Entries from p.313 are in a different hand
    Inserted into the front of the volume is a handwritten note by an unknown author; "Official duplicates of the Reports of Courts Martial held upon officers, non-commissioned officers and privates in the Peninsular, India, West Indies, Gibraltar, Malta, Newfoundland, Canada & etc. a clearly written manuscript of 362 pp. folio dating from Feb. 23 to July 26, 1811 ... "
