  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Andrew Sinclair was born in Scotland, on 13 April 1794. Assistant surgeon, Royal Navy, 1822-32, during this period he collected botanical and zoological specimens for the British Museum and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Colonial Secretary, New Zealand, 1844-56, a member of the Legislative Council from 1844. Elected a fellow of the Linnean Society, 1857. In 1858, began collecting material for J. D. Hooker's Handbook of the New Zealand flora (1864-67). March 1861 Sinclair drowned whilst on Julius Haast geological surveying expedition of the headwaters of the Rangitata River, Canterbury. -- extracted from Molloy, Brian P.
