    Harold Hardwick became Australia's first Empire champion in 1911 when he won gold medals in both swimming and boxing at the Festival of Empire Sports. He also won one gold and two bronze medals in swimming at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm. He is regarded as one of Australia's finest all-round sportsmen having also represented New South Wales at rugby union and excelling in gymnastics, water-polo and surf lifesaving.
