John Piper (1773-1851) arrived in Sydney in 1792 as an ensign in the New South Wales Corps. He was promoted to the full rank of captain in 1806 while on duty at Norfolk Island. In 1813 he was appointed to the civilian post of Naval Officer, a remunerative position which included the collection of customs duties. After an investigation into his affairs, Piper resigned his post in April 1828 and retired with his family to Alloway Bank near Bathurst.
