In 1790, George Vancouver was appointed Commander of the ship Discovery (not James Cook's vessel of the same name). He was entrusted with three assignments, namely, to receive the surrender of a Spanish post at Nootka Sound, to make a detailed survey of the coast from California to Alaska; and, thirdly, to ascertain whether an entry or navigable passage existed to the Northwest Coast. Sailing from Falmouth on April 1, 1791, the expedition followed Cook's route round the Cape of Good Hope, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, and Hawaii. Entries include place, date, description of small stores expenses by month (such as powder, paper cartridges, spunge heads, tallow, flints, musquet rods), reason for use, quantity, and amount. Each page is verified and signed by Vancouver and Collett.
