    George Coppin, born in England, was a comic actor and entrepreneur who, with his actress wife Maria, came to Australia in 1843. He performed in several theatres including the Royal Victoria Theatre (Adelaide), Queen's Theatre Royal (Melbourne) and is credited with fostering the development of Australian Theatre. -- Reference: Australian Dictionary of Biography.
