  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Sir Frederick McCoy (1817-1899), professor of palaeontology and museum director, was born in Dublin. Throughout his career, McCoy classified and catalogued several museum collections including the museum of the Dublin Geological Society, the Woodwardian Museum Cambridge in collaboration with Adam Sedgwick, and the private collection of Sir Richard Griffith. From 1849-1854 McCoy was Professor of Geology and Mineralogy at Queen's College, Belfast. In August 1854 McCoy became the first Professor of Natural Science at the University of Melbourne that opened in 1855 and was appointed Director of the Museum of Natural and Applied Science in 1857. -- Reference: Australian Dictionary of Biography.     Letters mainly received by Frederick McCoy from various individuals with the main correspondent being Adam Sedgwick. Topics include; general news, finances, the acquisition of geological specimens, discoveries in science. Also includes three unidentified portrait photographs (2 carte-de-visite photographs - one is signed "Alfred 1869"; 1 cabinet photograph by Johnstone O'Shannessy & Co. Melbourne.); tender for a lease of new run of Crown Lands 1861.
