    1 portrait medallion - 7.7 x 6 cm (portrait, site), 15.3 x 13.2 cm, frame (loop, 1.3 cm) - White on blue jasper ware medallion in gilt mount within oval dark brown wooden frame with glass front. The frame is carved with several ridges around the outside. A pin and a metal loop is affixed to the top of the frame to assist in hanging

    The portrait is a three-quarter profile of James Cook in relief.

  • General note

    This Wedgwood medallion of Cook is significant for its mastery of the difficult three-quarter view. This version, after the portrait by William Hodges, is one of several portrait medallions of Cook issued by Wedgwood.

    The medallion is similar to another held in the Mitchell Library (P*25) and in the Dixson Library (DL Pa 95).
