- Physical DescriptionDrawings - 8.8 x 6.7 cm. (portrait, sight) - 12.6 x 11 cm. (case) - 1 watercolour on ivory miniature, mounted with gold painted rectangular border and glass cover, stored in original dark red cross-grained morocco rectangular shaped case. The case is lined in dark red velvet, has a hinged lid, and two metal hooks and eyelets on the right-hand side for fastening.
- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
Mary Hassall was born at Malair near Camden, N.S.W. in 1828. She was the daughter of Jonathan Hassall (1798-1834) and Mary nee Rouse (1799-1883); and granddaughter of Rev. Rowland Hassall, and Richard and Elizabeth Rouse. In 1853 she married William Walker (1828-1908). -- Reference: Australian Dictionary of Biography. Vol.6, 1851-1890. Carlton, Vic.: Melbourne University Press, 1976 - Scope and ContentMary Hassall is seated and holds a flower in her right hand of a similar type displayed in a green vase to her left. Her clothing consists of a blue silk dress, long-waisted with a plastrom bodice, pagoda sleeves with under sleeves, and the edge of a chemise undergarment is visible at the neckline. Mary's jewellery includes a bracelet, brooch, and muff chain.
