    1 item of jewellery - 2.9 x 2.4 cm., portrait, inside frame (sight) - 4.4 x 3.6 cm. (frame) - hand-painted photograph portrait in oval shaped metal pinchbeck frame painted gold, attached with clasps to eight strands of plaited human of hair, blonde in colour.

    The female in this portrait wears a muslin dress typical of the late 1780's that comprises a fitted sleeveless bodice over a undergown with a fichu (sheer muslin) shawl across the shoulders. Her hair is unpowdered.

  • General note

    The miniature is an overpainted photograph of an earlier watercolour.
    Although the costume is dated to late 1780's, the female in this portrait is older than her chronological age for this period.
    This item is fashioned like a choker and may have been worn by a family descendant.
    The text on the mount on reverse of image is difficult to discern.
    Two plaited strands of hair are loose from clasps.
