John Shaw Neilson is widely regarded as one of Australia's finest lyric poets. His first poem was published in the Bulletin in 1896, thus beginning an influential relationship with A.G. Stephens as his editor and literary advisor. In 1905 his eyesight began to fail and this proved a hindrance to his writing. His first published volume of poems appeared in 1919 and was followed by another four, and there have been several more since his death in 1942. - Scope and ContentOriginal manuscript of the poem 'Old Granny Sullivan' together with a copy of the printed version (and original illustrated envelope) published in 1916 by The Bookfellow, A.G. Stephens' press. The manuscript poem is signed by Neilson with a note stating 'This has never been printed'. A separate note states that it was 'written by his sister owing to his bad eyesight'.
