    Paintings - 9.2 x 7 cm., image - 11.8 x 9.5 cm., frame; 13.2 x 11.1 x 1.7 cm., case - 1 oil Paintings on ivory miniature, affixed to rectangular masonite backing sheet with metal mount painted gold and glass front. Stored in brown cardboard rectangular shaped case with gold leaf design around outer edges and lined in red velvet, with hinged lid and metal button clasp for closing.

    A pencil inscription on reverse of mount states, ""This portrait / was painted - (by a friend) - / as a parting gift to / his Mother. 1825 / The oil painting of his father - / Charles Wilkinson was / painted in Egypt by a French / artist named Artaud [?] / A"

    According to a note on the Mitchell Library files, Alfred Wilkinson was an officer in the 33rd Regiment Madras Infantry who came to Victoria in 1852 in the ship Kohinoor. He died at Pokolbin 6 February 1896.
    An accompanying non-contemporaneous cardboard label in an unknown hand bears the inscription in black text, "Lieut. Alfred Wilkinson / father of Frederic who / planted / the first wine / grapes in Pokolbin"

    The centre of the portrait is cracked in two places.
    The lower edge at the back of the case has broken off.
