Grazier, sugar-grower. Hope was a son of John Hope, fourth Earl of Hopetoun. He arrived in Australia in 1843 and spent some time travelling before finally settling in Queensland in 1853

1) Journal of a voyage from England to Sydney Mar. to Aug. 1843. 2) Diary, May 1844-1845, containing an account of a voyage on H.M.S. Thalia, sailing to Tahiti and Hawaii. In Hawaii, Hope collected botanical specimens and described in detail local vegetation, soil conditions, agricultural practices, the Hawaiian people and their customs. Expenses incurred are listed periodically. From Feb. to May 1845 Hope travelled from Honolulu to Sydney via Tahiti and other Pacfic Islands. He describes encounters with the natives, and relates some of the mythology of Huanhine. 3) Book-lists on various topics such as natural history and geography. 4) Journal Jan.-May 1851, kept during a voyage from Sydney to England per General Hewitt, when he took lizards and small Australian birds to give the Zoological Gardens, plus three emus. 5) List of over 300 botanical names with location of habitat in the Pacific Islands. 6) Journal Feb.-Oct. 1857 of daily activities on a property near Brisbane, including mustering cattle, shearing sheep, and building
