  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Master of the Yacht Goshawk. A resident of Cowes, England. Cotton was a keen photographer, developing his own film on board the Goshawk
  • Scope and Content
    1) Diary kept by Cotton between Dec. 1874 when the Goshawk set sail from England, and Jan. 1876, when it returned. During the round trip, the Goshawk called at Cadiz, Algiers and Malta, then was towed 1450 miles through the Suez Canal and Red Sea to Aden. After spending some time in Ceylon she sailed to Batavia, Singapore, Bangkok and then to Darwin. The return voyage to England was made via Batavia, Mauritius and Cape Town. The journal includes lively descriptions of the gentlemen passengers and of customs and people observed at the various ports of call. Details are recorded of the fauna and flora observed during the trip, together with weather and navigation information. 2) Diary written between May and Aug. 1874 during a voyage from Cowes, England, to Hammerfest and Spitzbergen in Norway. During the voyage the Goshawk sailed far north, over the 80 degrees line of latitude, to allow its passengers to hunt seals. Cotton evidently had a keen interest in the dress and customs of the inhabitants of the region, as well as the wildlife
