    James Saumarez Mann entered the Royal Navy in 1835 and reached the rank of Lieutenant but was later transferred to Coastguard duty due to ill health. His cousin, Frederick Gother Mann worked as a surveyor in W.A. at the end of the 19th century
  • Scope and Content
    1) Journal kept by J.S. Mann Sept. 1836-Jan. 1837, while serving in H.M.S. Victor on a voyage from Sydney to New Zealand, Tahiti, Fiji and other Pacific Islands. The journal describes conditions on board and includes sketches of ports of call. Letter 1836 to his sister, describing Sydney and referring to Maoris. 2) Seven letters written by F.G. Mann to his family 1889-1909, during which period he was working as a surveyor in Western Australia. They describe aspects of railway development, and the end of the gold rush and the work of local doctors and priests. 3) The Mann family: notes on some members of the Mann family and their connections with the Gother, Fyers and Thorold families compiled by Hilda Maud Thorold and Violet Mary Mann (1950)
