    Capt. Owen Stanley, naval officer and marine surveyor, was for three years engaged in survey work along the southern coast of New Guinea. Charles Edward Stanley, brother of Owen, was private secretary to Sir William Denison in Tasmania
  • Scope and Content
    1) Papers re Owen-Stanley collected by Mrs Adelaide Lubbock for her book "Owen Stanley". 2) Correspondence of the Stanley family 1837-50 including letters between Owen Stanley and his father Bishop Edward Stanley. Includes Owen Stanley's account of the fifth cruise of H.M.S. Rattlesnake, 1849 June 3-Oct. 2. There are also extracts from Thomas Huxley's diary of the fifth voyage. 3) Correspondence of Charles Stanley 1832-49 with his family relating chiefly to his voyage and life in Tasmania. Also includes sketches, maps and plans
