The papers concern the estate of Surgeon John Harris (1754-1838), who arrived in New South Wales in 1790, and was later proprietor of large estates including Harris Park at Parramatta, Ultimo, Shane's Park, and the Killangan station near Yass. On his death, his estate was bequeathed to three brothers in Ireland who sent sons and a son-in-law (John Brown) to Australia to look after their interests. The papers deal with the management of the properties, emphasizing the financial and legal aspects. Included is Brown's diary 1840-1845, commencing with his departure from England for Australia and concluding with the return journey via Port Phillip and Valparaiso
