Horatio Herbert Kitchener was born in 1850. During the Boer War he was appointed Chief of Staff and then later become Commander in Chief. He visited Australia and New Zealand. World War I saw his appointment as Secretary of State for War. He lost his life on 5 June 1916 when H.M.S. Hampshire was sunk on her way to Russia
