- General note
Under the direction of the Admiralty Board of the Lord High Admiral (1660-1673, 1702-1708, 1827-1828), the Navy Board was responsible for the civil administration of the Royal Navy. Its structure remained basically unaltered from 1692 to 1796 and comprised a Controller (the senior naval officer), Surveyor, Clerk of Acts, Controllers of Treasurer's, Victualling and Storekepper's Assounts, and a varying number of Extra Commissioners. The Navy Board was reformed in 1796 to consist of 10 members: the Controller, Deputy Controller, 2 Surveyors, and 6 Commissioners, 5 of whom were to be civilians. The work of the Board was to be supervised by three Committees: the Committee of correspondence, Committee of Accounts, and Committee for Stores. There was a further re-organization in 1808 and a third Surveyor was added to the Board in 1813. With the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815, the size of the Board and the number of its staff were gradually reduced and in June 1832 both the Navy Board and the Victualling Board were abolished and their functions transfered to the five Principal Officers of the Navy: the Surveyor, Accountant General, Storekeeper General, Controller of Victualling and Transport Service, and the Physician
