James Mouat was Principal Medical officer for the Imperial troops in Australia and New Zealand. From 1860 to 1861 and 1863 to 1865 Mouat served in New Zealand in the Maori Wars inder Generals Pratt and Cameron. During the latter campaign of the Maori Wars, Mouat was Deputy Inspector General of Hospitals, being promoted to Surgeon General in 1864. -- Reference: Alexander Turnbull Library, National Library of New Zealand, Online Jan. 2004. - Scope and ContentLetterbook containing copies of correspondence written by Mouat to his superior officers mainly whilst a medical officer at Taranaki during the New Zealand Land wars and military campaigns. The letters are written from Melbourne, Auckland, and Waitara and relate to administration of military medical services including to Maori population of Taranaki, promotion, conflict with Dr. Gibson, state of military camps, sanitation, casualties, supplies used and required, justification for returning to Australia, and recognition of the medical arm of the army.
