    Contains geological and financial notes and drawings.
    General notes include: measurements of distances between towns, lists of people's names, references to the Frankland map, observations and camps, physical descriptions of geological features, and rations from Mr Stieglitz.
    Financial notes include: estimated costs of camp equipment, house allowances and expenses, miscellaneous expenses incurred for the Geological Survey, and mathematical calculations.
    Sketches include: Section from the river Loddon 2 miles S. of Bryants Station over Mt Tarrengower and Mt Alexander [Victoria] ...; pencil and watercolour sketches of views of Aden, various islands, Mauritius; mining reefs at Ballarat and Bendigo; aurora lights; Ben Lomond; St Paul's Dome; untitled landscapes; geological features; and miscellaneous sketches.
  • General note

    The author of this work has not been identified and cannot be substantiated. Previoulsy attributed to Charles Gould (as his name appears on page 41), the volume is partially written by Adolphe von Ibsen (see pages 113-116).
    Affixed to the inside of the front cover is a typescript note composed in 1954 by a Mitchell Library Officer that discusses the authorship of this work.
    Several styles of handwritting appear in this volume.
    The text is written in both ink and pencil.
    The volume is reversible as it has been used from front to back.
    Some drawings are incomplete and some are annotated.
    The printed map, "Sketch section from the river Loddon ..." was inserted into the volume in April 1954.
    There is provision for a pencil to be stored at the upper edge of the front cover.
    The brass clip that is part of the closing mechanism is broken.
    "D.S.M" initials appear on front endpaper.
