Eugene Dominique Nicolle, refrigeration engineer and businessman, was born in Rouen France and arrived in Australia in 1853. By 1855, Nicolle had established practice as an engineer in both Sydney and New Zealand. In 1861, Nicolle and Richard Dawson patented an ice-making machine designed by Nicolle. This machine was to form the basis of a business, Sydney Ice Company that produced ice in a factory located in Paddington, Sydney. Following this, developments and alterations were made to the original design that were also patented and gained the financial backing of T.S. Mort. With the support of Mort, the business was renamed New South Wales Ice Co. and produced a variety of refrigeration devices. The culmination of this research was a design that won a medal at the Metropolitan Exhibition, 1874 -- Reference: Australian Dictionary of Biography. Vol.5, 1851-1890. In 1946, the Mitchell Library received a donation of Nicolle papers from S.E.C. Nicolle, the grandson of E.D. Nicolle, that is located at A 2750 and A 2751.
