    1 painting - 21.8 x 16.8 cm. (image, sight), 29.7 x 24.8 cm. (frame) - oil on board, in gold painted rectangular wooden frame that is decorated along inner edge with a curved "tongue" design, and balls along the outer edge of frame.
  • Scope and Content
    Bigge is seated at a writing bureau and holds a letter with the text, "Dated 16 [Nov.?] / 1819 / Papers / relating to / New / South Wales". He is wearing a brown jacket with black collar, a cream coloured shirt with white stock at neckline, and grey trousers.

  • General note

    The painting is on wooden board primed with gesso.
    The portrait is very similar to a watercolour portrait of John Thomas Bigge by Thomas Uwins (P2/290) that may have been a study for the oil painting ; and a glazed ceramic portrait of Bigge (PM 153).
