    F. E. Lawes was a brother of the Rev. William George Lawes, the pioneer LMS missionary on Niue. The former was stationed on Niue from 1868 to 1910
  • Scope and Content
    Compiled before 1907 this notebook of 124 pp. gives the Niue equivalents of English words from a' to mistrust'. A second notebook containing the words for the rest of the alphabet appears to have been lost. The complete vocabulary was the basis for the vocabulary published in A Vocabulary and grammar of the Niue dialect of the Polynesian language by Edward Tregear and S. Percy Smith (Wellington, 1907). Smith was the first Government Resident on the island after it was annexed to New Zealand in 1900
