    Emily May Pateman (b. 1893) was dedicated as a missionary with the London Missionary Society in 1922 and sailed for the Gilbert Islands to work as a teaching missionary

    A collection of Gilbertese stories compiled by Pateman concerning the history, traditions and customs of the Gilbert Islands. Most of the stories were used by Pateman in the publication Aia karaki nikawai I-Tungaru (Myths and legends of the Gilbertese people), 1942
