Koby Abberton is one of the new breed of "free" surfers who do not surf on the world tour but earn money from riding big waves around the world for photo shoots. Contesting the World Qualifying Series event at Maroubra was unusual for him. His reputation as a fearless board rider and senior member of the infamous Bra Boys gang has made him popular with young surfers.
