    Scant information is known about John Campbell's early life or artistic training. After this view was executed, Campbell settled in Western Australia, though returned to Sydney in the late 1910's. The Art Gallery of Western Australia held an exhibition of Campbell's works in 2003.

    The view depicted in this watercolour looks northwards across Double Bay from the higher ground of Edgecliff.
