  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

"During the winter concert season in 1907 Violet Mount left for England after singing in oratorio in Sydney and Melbourne for several years. She was 'doubtless Australia's best soprano', the Sydney Mail said. 'Ada Crossley wrote, asking her to go straight to her, and promising many engagements, including oratorio. She is certain to do well in London'.
In May 1908 the paper reported that London critics were highly praising a masked soprano, L'Incognita, who had been singing arias from opera with great success at the Alhambra music hall. 'It now appears that the artist in question is Miss Violet Mount, the brilliant soprano who did excellent work in Sydney', it said. She made numerous recordings as L'Incognita. Record collectors debated the identity of the artist for many years and some famous names were advanced."
