    Jacob Janssen, painter was born in 1779 in Elbing, Prussia. He spent time in the U.S.A., South America, India and Singapore before arriving in Australia on the 'Louisa Campbell' in December 1840. Reference: Jacob Janssen - Memorandum book, 1807-1849?, B 985.

    Untitled, however identified as Baltimore from street key along upper edge of painting in pencil. Street Key: A. York St, B. Hughes St, C. Light St, D. Calvert St, E. South St, F. Commerce St. Reference: Plan of the city of Baltimore compiled from actual survey by Fielding Lucas, Jr., 1822. Viewed online at Library of Congress Geography and Map Division Washington website. In addition, Janssen was known to be on the eastern seaboard of the United States that year and to have visited Baltimore (see his Memorandum book, 1807-1849? at B 985, pp. 104-105). Some of the buildings are similar to those found in 'A guide to Baltimore architecture' by John R. Dorsey, Maryland, Tidewater Publishers, 1973. N917.522043/1 and 'Baltimore: the building of an American city' by Sherry H.Olson, Baltimore, John Hopkins University Press, 1980. NQ975.26/1
    On verso of the last section is a pencil outline of the portion of panorama on the third section.
