- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
John Betts arrived in Sydney in September 1829. The following year he married Mary Marsden, daughter of the Rev. Samuel Mardsen. They went to live on Mary Marsden's grant of land, named Vale Head, near Molong. - Scope and ContentBetts gives particulars of his voyage to Australia on the Eamont which left London in April 1829 and arrived in Sydney on 1 September 1829. Betts took a lease on a house in Parramatta. He describes his social life in Parramatta and Sydney, relations with the Marsden, Hassall and other families, his marriage to Mary Marsden, his interest in gardening and some business affairs. The last section of the book contains accounts which suggest that he may have kept a school.
