  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
William Bland (1789-1868), a naval surgeon, was transported to Australia in 1813 for killing a man in a duel. He received a pardon in 1815 and began private practice in Sydney.
Robert Lowe, later Viscount Sherbrooke (1811-1892), arrived in Sydney in 1842 where he achieved prominence as a lawyer and politician. He returned to England in 1850.
  • Scope and Content
This is part of the challenge to a duel from William Bland to Robert Lowe after a speech Lowe had given in the Legislative Council in 1849 about not having former convicts (i.e. Bland) serve on the senate of the new University of Sydney. There had been enmity between them as a result of Lowe defeating Bland in the second election for the Legislative Council the previous year.
