  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Henry Dangar (1796-1861), surveyor and pastoralist, was born at St. Neot Cornwall, England. He was the first of six brothers to emigrate arriving at Sydney in 1821. He was appointed Assistant Surveyor of Lands and surveyed the Camden and Argyle counties before being transferred to Newcastle where he surveyed Newcastle and the Hunter River district. He surveyed the Hunter River area extensively, opening up new areas for settlement. After being dismissed from his position after a dispute concerning a land grant to himself and his brother William, Dangar returned to England and wrote Index and directory to map of the country bordering upon the Hunter River, published in 1828. In 1830 he returned to Australia to work for the Australian Agricultural Co. as a surveyor at Port Stephens. In June 1833 he retired to his property 'Neotsfield' near Singleton. By 1850 he had increased his pastoral holdings to more than three hundred thousand acres. He was appointed a magistrate and a member of the district council. In 1845 he was elected to the old Legislative Council for the seat of Northumberland which he held until 1851. He retired to his property, 'Grantham', at Potts Point.
Henry Cary Dangar (1830-1917), barrister and parliamentarian, was born at Port Stephens, NSW, the son of Henry and Grace Dangar. He was educated at Sydney College and Trinity College, University of Cambridge, where he graduated with Bachelor of Arts (1853) and Master of Arts (1857). He was admitted to Middle Temple London in 1854 but did not practise law in Australia. On his return to Australia Dangar was involved in commercial and pastoral interests and was a partner in companies including Dangar Bros and Dangar Gilchrist & Co. Henry Carey Dangar was elected a member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seats of West Sydney (1874-1877) and East Sydney (1880-1882), and the NSW Legislative Council (1883-1917).
Horace William Dangar (1871-1923), was born at 'Grantham' Potts Point, son of Henry Carey Dangar and his wife Lucy Jane, nee Lamb. Dangar was Colonel in command of the RAF artillery and a member of the Military Board (1914-1917).
