    The majority of these papers came to the Mitchell Library in response to the Library's general appeal for the diaries and other papers of Australian servicemen and women who served in World War I.
  • Scope and Content
    1. (i) Wireless message from the troopship Orvieto regarding the sinking of the German raider Emden by HMAS Sydney, 14 November 1914. (ii) Special Army Corps Order, 30 June 1915. (iii) Instructions for Defence Against Asphyxiating Gas, 9 June 1915.
    2. (i) Precis of information given by Theodore, Private of the 17th Regiment, who came into ANZAC trenches - 161 Subsection at the head of Kaiadjik Dere, 9 October 1915. (ii) Special Army Corps Order 7 September 1915.
    3. (i) War Office telegrams received by wireless at Gallipoli, printed and distributed amongst Headquarters Staff, 27 & 28 November 1915. (ii) Peninsula Press (newsheet) No. 90, 29 November 1915.
    4. Original contributions to 'In Memoriam ANZAC Day April 25th 1916', a souvenir produced by Frank Morton for the first anniversary of Anzac Day. Includes poems by David Mckee Wright, Arthur H. Adams, Frank Morton, and Whittier. Designs by Sydney Ure Smith.
    5. Programme of Australian & NZ Training Centre Sports to be held at Tel-El-Kebir, 29 July 1916.
    6. Corporal J. R. Rawson: Leave or Duty Ration Book, 24 September- 8 October 1918 and Leave Pass, 4 January 1918.
    7. Field Message Book of Lieutenant G. A. Hay, 28 March-14 May 1918.
    8. Programme of 17th Battalion AIF Swimming Carnival, 22 June 1918.
    9. Address delivered on 4th November 1918 by the Bishop of Amiens in memory of Australian officers and men fallen on the Somme Battlefield. Typed copies with related correspondence including a letter from the Bishop, 27 July 1919.
    10. Receipts and reports relating to the 13th and 45th Battalion's Comforts Fund, 1917-18.
    11. Copies of letters from L. E. Armstrong, an Australian nurse in London at the time of the Armistice, 10 & 11 November 1918
    12. Note to the value of 20 centimes being legal tender in all the villages and towns mentioned thereon. The whole area covered by these places was the scene of the great battles of the Somme which the AIF took part in from 1916 to the close of hostilities.
